Abstract: Threat actors have always played the game of emotions. Fear is the emotion they are using right now to lure users to click on an email or manipulate them to install an application. In the last four months, cyber criminals have used fear as their main weapon to compromise users by using pandemic-related themes to deliver malware. The dropped malwares are deadlier and stealthier and are hybrid in nature. There is a need for advanced investigation techniques, like memory forensics in the case of ransomware attacks that are ransacking health sectors and entropy-based detection for new-age trojan exfiltrations. The talk discusses how we use traditional methods to identify these threats and also add a pinch of new-age forensics tricks to do some big reveals. We will handle out-of-the-box new tricks to fool and defeat malware attacks. We will also discuss how to use entropy to defeat steganographic payloads and exfiltrations.

Presenter:
Shyam Sundar Ramaswami is a two-time TEDx speaker who focuses on malware and memory forensics. Shyam is a Senior Research Scientist with Cisco's Security Business Group. He has delivered talks in several conferences and universities like Black Hat (Las Vegas), Stanford University (Cyber Security Program), Qubit Forensics (Serbia), Nullcon 2020 (Goa), Cisco Live (Barcelona) and in several IEEE forums in India. Shyam's interviews have been published in ZDNET and CISO. He has also taught classes on “Advanced Malware Attack and Defenses” in Stanford University’s cybersecurity program and runs a mentoring program called “Being Robin,” where he mentors students from all over the globe on cybersecurity.
